Who Is the God of the Bible?
There is one, and only one, living and true God. He is the Creator and Ruler of heaven and earth. God has always existed as three persons – Father, Son, and Holy Spirit – who are perfectly united and infinite in glory. God is sovereignly over all things, needs nothing outside himself, and inexpressibly holy. He alone deserves all honor, glory, trust, and love.
The Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are each fully and equally God. They share the same divine nature but are distinct in who they are and how they relate to one another. They eternally exist in utmost joy within the all-satisfying perfections of the Godhead. Each divine Person carries out different yet perfectly united roles in creation, providence, and redemption.
This God always has been and always will be. He cannot be seen, yet he reigns over the entire universe. He lacks nothing, is completely free, never changes, and is all-powerful and all-knowing. He exists outside space and time and yet is present everywhere. God is greater than all he has made and infinite in worth and beauty. He alone is without sin and perfect in goodness, love, mercy, righteousness, justice,wisdom, and faithfulness.
The LORD passed before [Moses] and proclaimed, “The LORD, the LORD, a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness, keeping steadfast love for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, but who will by no means clear the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children and the children’s children, to the third and the fourth generation” (Exodus 34:6–7).
