How Can We Summarize the Historical Books Within the O.T.?

The Historical Books advance the storyline of the OT by describing Israel’s life in the promised land, exile, and return. These books remind us that God is active within the history of his people, remains faithful to his promises, and is shaping redemptive history towards the salvation in Jesus Christ.

Joshua tells the story of how God brings Israel into the promised land and gives them rest.

Judges tells the story of Israel’s disobedient, downward spiral and God repeatedly raising up leaders to rescue them.

Ruth tells the story of God mercifully preserving the family line of the coming messiah.

1-2 Samuel tell the story of God using the Prophet Samuel to instill a Davidic dynasty from which the Messiah King will come.

1-2 Kings tell the history of Israel’s good and bad kings as well as Israel’s exile from the promised land.

1-2 Chronicles tell the story of God remaining faithful to his people and his covenant even when the leaders of Israel fail.

Ezra-Nehemiah tells the story of God bringing Israel back into the promised land and calling his people to follow him.

Esther tells the story of how God remains faithful to his promises and protects his people during their exile.
