Is the Bible One Story or Several?

Then he said to them, “These are my words that I spoke to you while I was still with you, that everything written about me in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms must be fulfilled” (Luke 24:44).

From Genesis through Revelation, the Bible tells one overarching and unified story. This is the story of God saving of people for his glory through Jesus Christ. The Bible is one large story made up of many smaller stories.

From God’s creation of Adam and Eve, to the entrance of sin, to God raising up a people through Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, to God’s deliverance of the nation of Israel and the gift of a promise land, to Israel’s disobedience, exile, and return into the land, to the birth, life, ministry, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ, to the spreading of salvation across the world, to the planting and strengthening of churches, and to John’s vision of the end of this age and the one to come, God fashioned all of these stories to compose one grand melody about himself and his promised one, Jesus Christ, who came to forgive sinners and grant everlasting life and joy.

When we read Scripture, we must read the smaller stories on their own account as well as in light of this overarching story about the person and work of Jesus Christ.
